“A big part of the blame for this industry’s dire straits is on us and our unwillingness to pay for the work journalists produce,” says the “Last Week Tonight” host, after an explanation about how shows like his wouldn’t exist without newspapers. He also pointed out how political corruption could thrive in an environment in which journalists are being fired or forced to focus on social media and click-bait rather than on reporting.
