Novelists do this as well, isolating them from the world (e.g. working at night) and thinking solely about their work. Stephen Vizinczey wrote about this, saying you’re not wasting time staring off into space. Time spent thinking means mentally writing and rewriting until you’re sure you’ve got it right.

Even for myself (not a writer, just a white collar worker) time spent alone running or cycling is invaluable. The monotony of distance and the discomfort of doing it forces the brain to concentrate on something unrelated. It’s a great time to mull over problems or ideas. I gave up TV a year ago and quickly got over missing it, giving up other obsessions isn’t hard either.
