Currently, she teaches a seminar on Issues and Practices in Modern Architecture and Urbanism in the Graduate Department of Architecture, Interior design, and Lighting, Parson The School for Design, The New School University, New York City. This course received special recognition in the 2005 National AIA Ecological Literacy Initiative. She also teaches a course on Nature, Culture and Design for undergraduates and has been honored with a Distinguished Teaching Runner-up Award at The New School University. She has taught at Columbia and Cornell Universities and the Pratt Institute.

Ms. Gardner is a founding member of the Cloud Institute for Sustainability Education. In early 1990 Gardner spearheaded the founding and organizing of Environment'90s, a coalition of over 250 groups working for the environmental health of New York City. As Co-chair of the Association of Colligate Schools of Architecture Task Force on Sustainable Design, Ms. Gardner helped organize 'Sustainable Pedagogies and Practices', the 2003 ACSA/AIA Teachers' Seminar. With The Rockwell Group, she exhibited 'the Hall of Risk', in the 2002 Venice Biennale.
Ms. Gardner's students who credit her with having inspired them to their life's work include New York Times Architectural Critic, Herbert Muschamp; Chief Environment Officer for the NYC Parks Department, Paul Berrizi; Founder of Public Markets Collaborative, Hilary Baum; Executive Director for The Project for Public Spaces, Kathy Madden; and, President and Founder Global Possibilities, Casey Coates Danson.
